6G-SANDBOX Unveiled: Project Achievements and Experimental Insights

Join us for a two-part webinar highlighting the key developments and experimental breakthroughs of the 6G-SANDBOX project. Designed to accelerate 6G innovation in Europe, this webinar will showcase the project’s platform capabilities, real-world trial results, and technical achievements to date.

Presenters

  • Michael Dieudonne
    Michael Dieudonné is currently an R&D Department Manager for the 6G program and manages Keysight’s relationship with EC and local authorities in Europe. He currently coordinates the 6G-SANDBOX SNS-JU project and is a member of the 6G-IA Board. He supervises research performed in different domains around B5G/6G wireless, network test, and high-frequency metrology.
    Over the years he initiated and led different R&D initiatives such as test automation (with the launch of OpenTAP.io, the first open source project from Keysight), Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) test, the Internet of Things (IoT) test and battery test.

    Over the years he has been active in various international cooperative projects, such as the EURAMET EMPIR MET5G Project (on 5G EMF), coordinated European Union (EU) SAMURAI Project defining early day multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques for 4G systems, and European Union-Horizon 2020 (EU-H2020) Triangle (test of application in a 5G context).

    Education: Michael Dieudonné holds an MsC in Micro-electronics, Digital Design (De Nayer Institute part of the KULeuven) and an MBA from the Vlerick Business school accredited by all three major international quality assessment bodies: EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.

  • Pedro Merino Gomez
    Pedro Merino is professor at University of Malaga (UMA), where he is Director of the Institute for Software Technology and Software Engineering (ITIS). His research interests are new generation Internet, 5G/6G networks and automated methods for software reliability. He was PI in more than 50 national and international research projects, most of them in collaboration with industry. He is leading the 5G/6G research infrastructure Victoria Network, a private network that is used as testbed in 16 European projects related to experimental infrastructure, 5G and 6G. He was coordinator of the project EuWireless, and technical manager in projects SAID, 5Genesis and 6G-SANDBOX. He has published more than 100 conference or journal papers in the fields of wireless communications and software reliability, including leadership in several special issues. He represents University of Malaga in several international standardization bodies and associations like ETSI/3GPP, 6G IA, SNS JU or ERCIM
  • Adam Flizikowski
    Adam Flizikowski holds PhD from Bydgoszcz University of Technology (2023) as well as the position of Research Executive at IS-Wireless. His research and commercial experiences both deal with mobile systems (4G/5G), especially in the areas of RRM techniques (admission control, congestion control) supported by AI/ML algorithms. In the last 3 years he actively contributes to the 6G research, in EC R&D projects of the company e.g. SNS JU 6G-SANDBOX (programmable 6G RAN), Chips JU BRAINE (workload prediction/placement optimization for edge DC), and Chips JU SMARTY (security driven RAN scaling) and more. He holds an MSc’00 in multimedia systems and is author (and co-author) of more than 75 papers from multiple topics in wireless communications (e.g. RRM, QoE, VoIP) also in cyber security and adaptive multimedia systems. He co-authors 5 patents related to mobile systems architectures and algorithms.
  • Alvaro Villegas
    Alvaro Villegas leads the Extended Reality Lab in Nokia, a research center focused in the application of immersive media (VR, AR, XR) to human communications. He received a six-year telecommunications engineering degree at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) and he completed an MBA Core Program at ESCP Europe Business School. Alvaro received the Distinguished Member of Technical Staff title from Bell Labs. He has dedicated his nearly 30 years of professional life to innovate in digital video in different companies: Telefónica, ONO, Motorola, Nagravision, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia, where he has filed more than 40 patents. In his former role as Head of Bell Labs in Nokia Spain and now as lead of XR Lab he applies XR, AI/ML and 5G/6G technologies to improve human communications.
  • Dimitris Tsolkas
    Dr. Dimitris Tsolkas holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. Over the past decade, he has actively contributed to both research and teaching within the department.He currently leads research and development activities at Fogus Innovations & Services P.C., a Greek SME involved in numerous European and national R&D projects. Dr. Tsolkas is also engaged in the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), where he serves as co-chair of the Reliable Software Networks Working Group (SNWG). In addition, he holds the position of vice-chair at ETSI SDG OpenCAPIF. His research interests focus on resource and service management in mobile and IoT communication systems, with recent work emphasizing architectural design and performance evaluation for next-generation (beyond-5G) networks.
  • Joao Ferreira
    Joao Ferreira is a Research and Teaching Assistant at KU Leuven and a Research & Development Engineer at Keysight. His work bridges academia and industry in 6G wireless, focusing on near-field beamforming, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), and measurement/calibration. He completed advanced studies in Telecommunications Engineering at KU Leuven, with prior research at NOVA University Lisbon. He has authored peer-reviewed papers on physical-layer security and near-field communications and recently led an empirical wideband study of mmWave RIS and reflectors.
  • Matteo Pagin
    Matteo Pagin received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in telecommunication engineering from the University of Padova in 2018 and 2020, respectively, where he also received his
    Ph.D. degree in October 2024. Currently, he is with Keysight Technologies, Aalborg Research Center, Denmark.
    He has collaborated with several institutions, including Northeastern University, where he spent a research period from March to September 2023, CTTC, NYU, TU Darmstadt, Orange, Viasat, and Huawei.
    His research interests include the design and evaluation of protocols for next generation cellular networks (5G and beyond).
    He was awarded the Best Paper Award at IEEE MedComNet 2020 and IEEE WCNC Workshops 2023.
